Is the Genealogy Library a branch of the Santa Cruz City-County Library System?

No. The Genealogy Library is housed within the Downtown Branch Library but its materials belong to the Santa Cruz County Genealogical Society. The project which involved adding the Genealogy Society materials to the SCPL catalog was a joint venture to help provide better access to genealogical material.

When is the Genealogy Library open to the public?

The library is available any time the Downtown Branch is open but is staffed by volunteers from the Society. The scheduled hours of the volunteers may vary from day to day but generally speaking, there should be a staffer on duty Mon. to Sat. 10 - 12:30 AM, & 1-3 PM. It is best to call first to see if a volunteer staffer is available.

How can I tell a book is in the Genealogy Library?

In the Library Catalog, the call number of the book will begin with "Genesoc."

Can I request Genealogical Society Library books for pickup at other SCPL branches, just like I can with other books?

No. All material is for reference use only at the Genealogy Library.

Are there any online resources I can use for my research?

Yes. Funds donated by the Genealogical Society have been used to purchase access to the following databases available through SCPL's website:

Ancestry Library Edition [Available ONLY from inside the Library (any branch).]

HeritageQuest Online [Library card and PIN required for remote access]

New England Historic Genealogical Society [Available ONLY at the Downtown Branch Library]

Newspapers.com World Collection

I don't live in the area — can you help me find a copy of an obituary?

Yes. The Genealogical Society offers research assistance for people who are unable to visit the library. An initial fee of $20 is required to get started and includes one hour of research. Extra research time, at a rate of $15 per hour, may be requested. For a copy of the research assistance on the GSSCC website go to http://scgensoc.org under Research Assistance.
