Digital Learning Lab

Workshops

Do you want to better understand your digital devices? Let's discover together how technology can support human flourishing!  You're invited to explore the useful ideas, techniques and resources in the Digital Learning Lab webpages.

Powerful Forces

There are forces within our digital landscape that can negatively affect our individual and collective well-being.  The Institute for the Future’s Cognitive Immunity project identified the following challenges we confront when using today's online technology:

  • Rapid advances are difficult to keep up with. The increasing complexity of technology is a source of frustration and can become a barrier to participating in modern life.

  • Opaque algorithms influence our sense-making and decision making. Invisible algorithms manipulate the information we see and manufacture demand, often leveraging our personal behavioral data for strategic advantage.

  • Bad actors can access digital devices and personal information to extort and exploit. Fraud cases keep increasing as criminals develop new methods for targeting victims using social engineering with technology.

  • New media can be fragmented and manipulated to amplify uncertainty, fear, outrage and conflict. Polarization and distrust is stimulated as people gravitate to sources that confirm their beliefs and biases.

Learning Areas

Realizing the benefits of our devices requires maneuvering through the ever present pitfalls.  Our process involves recognizing the shadow side of today's technology and discovering actionable steps to take and resources to explore within the following areas:

Proficiency Basics
Leverage basic skills and settings to reduce the self-doubt and discouragement that can result from trying to keep up with continuous changes.  Get started!

Privacy and Security
Know your options for keeping devices and accounts private and secure to limit the threat from those that seek to manipulate or extort.  Get started!

Media Navigation
Evaluate information critically and seek a variety of sources to prevent using or amplifying faulty information that exists within fragmented media environments.  Get started!

Mind and Body
Apply strategies that optimize your focus and quality of life to avoid overstimulation, addiction and isolation that can result from online connectivity.  Get Started!
