Immunity Lab

Workshops

Welcome to your place for building immunity from the downsides of using mobile devices. You are invited to join us in defining what a healthy relationship with technology looks like. We are asking the question, “how can we reduce risks and use mobile devices to benefit our lives?” Let's explore and learn together!

Powerful Forces

There are forces within today’s digital landscape that have the potential to negatively affect our individual and collective well-being.  The Institute for the Future’s Cognitive Immunity project has identified the following key challenges we must confront when using technology:

  • Rapid advances are difficult to keep up with. The increasing complexity of technology is a source of frustration and can become a barrier to participating in modern life.

  • Opaque algorithms influence our sense-making and decision making. Invisible algorithms and actors manipulate the information we see and manufacture demand, often leveraging our personal behavioral data for their advantage.

  • Bad actors can access digital devices and personal information to extort and exploit. Fraud cases keep increasing as criminals develop new methods for targeting victims using social engineering with technology.

  • New media is fragmented and amplifies emotional extremes. As people gravitate to specialized sources that confirm their beliefs and biases, polarization is further stimulated through engaging content that triggers conflict, fear and outrage.

Immunity Areas

Together we can integrate our understanding of potentially negative disruptive forces and build immunity from the shadow side of technology use.  Our process begins by identifying ready-to-apply solutions in four topic areas. Each immunity area has its own webpage that includes actionable steps and more resources to explore.  You can get started today!

Proficiency Basics

Privacy & Security
Immunize yourself from manipulation by those that seek to take your data in order to influence or extort.  Begin by knowing your options for keeping your data private and your device and accounts secure.  Get started!

Media Navigation
Immunize yourself from misinformation and polarizing tribalism that thrives within the emotionally charged and fragmented media environment.  Start by evaluating your information critically and seeking a variety of sources. Get started!

Health & Well-being
