Boulder Creek

The first free public library in Boulder Creek was established in 1906 and housed in the Women's Temperance Union Reading Room located on Central Avenue, now known as Highway 9. The collection totaled 469 volumes and there were one hundred thirty card-holders.

When the town voted to disincorporate in 1915 the contents of the library were put into storage and a request for the county to establish a library for Boulder Creek was requested. Two years later, in March, 1917 a county branch library was established in the Hartman Building where it operated until 1921 when it returned to the Women's Temperance Union building.

In 1945 the Women's Temperance Union sold the building housing the library to a private citizen who demanded more rent and the use of less space. Declining both requests, the library was moved to the Fire Department building in 1948. Still needing more space, the Fire Department considered building an additional wing on their building to house the library. Instead of a new building the Fire Department accepted an office building from the Santa Cruz Lumber Company in 1950. After moving the office on a flatbed truck up Highway 9 from Brookdale, the Fire Department settled the office next door to the Fire House. A legion of volunteers made it ready for the library. On January 2, 1951 the library settled in.

By the mid 1970s the need for a new, larger library was felt by the community. Led by a determined group of volunteers, a 1.3 acre parcel at the north end of town was donated by a local developer. Following a series of public workshops the branch began to take shape. Completed in 1985, the library is 4600 square feet with a community room, outdoor amphitheater, and enclosed deck. The library received an architectural prize for its design and is filled with artwork from local San Lorenzo Valley artists.
