It's time to Imagine Your Story with our Summer Reading Program Events! Programs held via Zoom require registration.

Programs for Kids:

Santiago's Magic • Thursday June 4 • 2:00 pm • Via Zoom

Santiago the Magician has been studying the art and history of magic for nearly thirty years. Join Santiago for an interactive Virtual Magic Show via Zoom. Bring a deck of cards so that you too can be a part of the magic!

NorCal Bats • Friday June 12 • 11:00 am AND 2:30 pm • Via Zoom

Here's your chance if you missed our Kickoff Event. Bats have a pretty bad reputation, especially now. But they are actually beneficial creatures in many ways. Join us for a live interactive program via Zoom with NorCal Bats, who are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of bats throughout Northern California. Live bats will be presented along with a slide show geared to dispel myths and prejudices against bats that can lead to the destruction of their roosts and colonies.

Programs for Teens:

Teen Dungeons and Dragons • Friday June 12 • 1:00 pm • Via Discord

Join SCPL for a weekly Dungeons & Dragons campaign where you can explore cool worlds, create interesting characters, stretch your imagination, and practice your storytelling skills. Whether you've been playing for a while or are new to the game, there's a place for everyone here. This program is for teens age 13-17 and requires registration for access link. We'll be using Discord as our platform. Registrants should try to make it to every session.

Author Talk with Dashka Slater • Saturday June 13 • 10:00 am • Via Zoom.

Best-selling author Dashka Slater has been telling stories since she could talk. An award-winning journalist who writes for such publications as The New York Times Magazine and Mother Jones, she is also the author of nine books of fiction and non-fiction for children and adults. Her true crime narrative, The 57 Bus, is winner of the 2018 Stonewall Book Award and a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor. Dashka will discuss her work, process, life, The 57 Bus, and related topics. The 57 Bus is the true story of two teenagers and the crime that changed their lives.

Virtual Writers Open Mic • Wednesday June 3 • 6:00 pm • Via Zoom

Writers of all types are invited to read their work aloud every Wednesday at 6pm. Readers looking for something new are also invited to listen. Registration is requred.

Tech Talks: Zoom 101 • Thursday June 4 • 11:00 am • Via Zoom

Learn how to safely host a secure Zoom meeting. Safety settings, scheduling, and basic features will be covered to get you more familiarized using Zoom, including Apple and Android apps. These are hands-on workshops that help us better understand our mobile devices. For more information on accessing Zoom, visit our website.

Virtual Trivia on Tap • Thursday June 4 • 6:00 pm • Via Zoom

This beloved weekly library program is now available from the comfort of your home so grab a cold (or warm) beverage, a pencil, and a sheet of paper, and let's do some trivia every Thursday! If you wish to work with a group of your choice please make sure each participant is logged in 5-10 minutes before the program begins and tell the host who you'd like in your team. Teams can have no more than 4 people.

Conversations for Change: Work, Workers and the Future of Work • Tuesday June 9 • 5:15 pm • Via Zoom

These conversations are designed to foster greater understanding among individuals who may have different viewpoints. Participants in these small group conversations, guided by a trained host, practice being open and curious about all perspectives, with a focus on learning from one another. Project Connect is a group of actively engaged citizens who care about bridging divides in our community as a means of preserving our democratic republic and the flourishing of our country. It is a Finding Common Ground team associated with Santa Cruz Indivisible.

People & Stories: Reading Deeply in Community • Wednesday June 10 • 1:30 pm • Via Zoom

People & Stories is dedicated to opening doors to literature for new audiences. Through oral readings and rigorous discussions of enduring short stories, we invite participants to find fresh understandings of themselves, of others, and of the world. Please note that some stories contain themes and language of an adult nature. We invite you to our special 8 week session on Zoom! Drop in for one or attend all 8 People & Stories sessions!
