GSSCC Lecture Series -- A Journey of Discovery: Researching the History of Your House, 1408 Broadway = A Case Study, Joe Michalak & Annette Hagopian

This presentation will focus on resources (both online and in-person) that can be used to research the deed and document history of a house, and will also show you what you might be able to learn about the people who lived there. Joe Michalak will share some general history of Santa Cruz’s East Side, and will explain the local house-history research process. Annette will tell about how and what she learned about the lives — the stories — of people who lived in her home through the years.

Presenters:

JOE MICHALAK earned an undergraduate degree in history at the University of Illinois (ChampaignUrbana) and a graduate degree in library and information science from Dominican University (River Forest, Il). He was director of the editorial research library at Encyclopaedia Britannica in Chicago for several years before moving to Santa Cruz to become head of reference services at UCSC’s McHenry Library in 1974. After leaving academia, he worked for several medical/scientific publishers and technology companies in the sales and marketing of research databases and software tools to academic, medical, and research institutions. More recently, he provided research assistance to his wife, Judith Steen (a founding member of the GSSCC), editor of the 3rd ed., of John Chase’s Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture. He was founding vice president of the Friends of the Cowell Lime Works Historic District at UCSC. Since retiring, he has researched and written with Judy, the history of numerous homes and their owners throughout Santa Cruz. He currently serves on the City of Santa Cruz, Historic Preservation Commission. Their home, built in 1853, is a designated city landmark.

ANNETTE HAGOPIAN has lived at 1408 Broadway since 1978. She has been a member of GSSCC for about ten years, and has served as Co-President and is currently a member of the Board of Directors. She has been working on various branches of her family’s genealogy as an avocation and passion for many years, and has turned that research into a family-history book for her four grandchildren. Her other interests and activities include traveling, reading, gardening, baking, and cheering on the SF Giants. She’s always wanted to research the history of her house.
