Description: Advocacy, Inc. is an independent nonprofit serving Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties since 1975. The Agency is comprised of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program and the Patients' Rights Advocate Program. Each program is unique as each is the only program that exists for the sole purpose of advocating and protecting the rights of the population it serves.

Coupling both programs into an independent agency, our goal is to provide the highest level of advocacy and rights protection for the clients we serve while offering the general community information and assistance concerning long-term care, quality of life/care issues, pre-facility placement procedures and guidelines, and mental health issues. As mandated advocates, Ombudsmen and Advocates provide a voice for the facility-placed seniors and disabled persons and mental health clients, expressing their concerns and complaints from their perspective with the goal of resolution.

ELIGIBILITY: Residents of long term care facilities or recipients of mental health services.
Mission: To protect, through advocacy, education and intervention, the rights of facility-placed seniors and disabled persons, and individuals with mental health needs.
Programs: The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is a federal and state mandated program charged with advocacy for, or on behalf of, seniors in residential care facilities for the elderly and skilled nursing facilities. Ombudsmen respond to facility residents' complaints; are mandated responders to all alleged or suspected abuse reports in facility settings; attend care plan conferences with residents' consent and provide trainings to facility staff and community groups on the Ombudsman Program, residents' rights and abuse prevention and abuse reporting requirements.

The Patients' Rights Advocate Program is a state mandated rights protection program, under the Department of Mental Health, providing rights protection and advocacy for mental health consumers living in any setting in either Santa Cruz or San Benito County. Patient Advocates respond to complaints concerning rights violations, denial of mental health service access, quality of care within facility settings and act as consumers' representatives in due process hearings.
