Description: The Japanese Cultural Fair is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the presentation and preservation of the cultural traditions of Japan. It is an annual event at Santa Cruz in June of each year to celebrate the beginning of the summer. This year's festival is on June 4, 2016 which will be the 30th consecutive year of the event. Admission is free.
Mission: The purpose of the Japanese Cultural Fair is to provide an opportunity for the community to increase their awareness and understanding Japanese culture. We believe that through education and exposure to culture of Japan, we can improve mutual understanding among neighbors on the Pacific Rim as well as enrich our community life here in Santa Cruz.
Programs: The fair introduces Japanese music (koto, Shamisen, Shakuhachi, and Taiko), folkdance, Okinawan dance, audience participatry folk dancing (Bon Odori), Kyogen comical play, Haiku reading,storytelling, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, bonsai demonstration, Kimono workshops,and martial arts demonstrations.

The fair's highlight is the internationally well known San Francisco Taiko Dojo which attracts several thousand people every year.
Volunteer Info: Anyone (regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, religion, physical disabilities, etc.) interested in Japanese culture is welcome to get involved and participate in preparing the fair. The Japanese Cultural Fair is a complete volunteer organization (no paid staff).
