Description: The California SIDS Program, under the direction of the California Department of Public Health, Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Division, was developed to help the many individuals involved and affected by the sudden unexpected death of an infant. The Program's dedicated professionals provide crisis intervention, counseling, bereavement support, educational/informational resources and referral to community services. Education, training, consultation, technical assistance and SIDS risk reduction outreach complement the array of available Program services.
Mission: The mission of the California SIDS Program is to:
1)Help reduce the emotional suffering of SIDS families and caregivers
2)Improve the knowledge and skills of people who interact with SIDS families
3)Increase public awareness and knowledge of SIDS
4)Promote infant care practices to reduce the risk of SIDS
Programs: Support Services: Crisis intervention and bereavement support is provided on a 24-hour basis.

Public Awareness and Education:
A variety of grief materials are available for bereaved individuals experiencing the sudden unexpected death of an infant. An array of handouts, instructional and educational resources for professionals involved with SIDS are readily accessible. Materials targeting families of newborns, expectant parents and caregivers provide guidelines for recommended maternal and infant care practices to reduce the risk of SIDS.
