The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture.

Title: The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture.
By: John Leighton Chase

There's definitely a lot of "here" here in Santa Cruz. With its easy to read maps and charming photographs, "The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture" has been satisfying the curiosity of thousands of gawkers and walkers since first published in 1975. The 3rd edition (published in 2005) is edited by local resident historian Judith Steen, and includes many photographs by another local resident historian Joe Michalak. This book will make your lunch hour more enjoyable as you stroll or power-walk through the historic areas of Beach Hill, Branciforte, Westside, Eastside, Mission Hill or the Seabright neighborhoods. Look for the oval blue plaques! The chapters on UCSC and the one on Pasatiempo (by Daniel Platt Gregory) are really fascinating and can help with your future plans for bike rides and family hikes. The author writes with much sensitivity about the changes to downtown since the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Appendices include: biographies of local architects, supplementary list of buildings, descriptions of architectural styles and an index by street address. After checking out the library's copy, I was inspired to purchase my own!
