Census 2020

Census 2020

The U.S. Constitution mandates a count of everyone in the country every 10 years, regardless of age, gender, race, income, housing or immigration status. The next Census Day is April 1, 2020. This is your chance to be counted. We are working hard with community partners to ensure a complete count in Santa Cruz County.

It Is Important!

The Census guides billions of dollars in annual spending on hospitals, schools, emergency services, roads and more, and each person missed will cost our community thousands of dollars over the next decade. Participation helps your community!

It Is Safe!

The Census is only a few questions long, and your answers are protected by federal law. The Census Bureau cannot share your information with anyone, including other federal agencies.

It Is Easy!

Much of the Census will be conducted online, with mail and phone responses also accepted. In-person follow-ups will help make sure we count everybody. Look for instructions on

participating beginning early in 2020.

Responding to the Census

Homes will begin receiving their invitation to respond to the 2020 Census between March 12-20. Take a look at this fact sheet to learn how the census will invite everyone to respond.

The 2020 Census will ask a few simple questions about you and everyone who is or will be living with you on April 1, 2020. This video will guide you through the process of responding online.

For the first time, you can choose to complete the census online, by phone, or by mail. Find out more about each of these methods below:

Please note that if you are responding online, you must complete the census in one sitting, as you don't have the ability to save your progress.
