Special Events for Summer Reading

Special Events June 7 - June 20

It's time to Imagine Your Story with our Summer Reading Program Events! Programs held via Zoom require registration.

Programs for Kids:

Kids Create STEAM • Tuesday June 9 • 3:30 pm • Via Youtube

We're hosting a series of STEAM programs for kids of all ages. Visit our Youtube Channel each week for a new project!

Virtual Tales to Tails • Wednesday June 10 & 17 • 10:00 am • Via Zoom or Youtube

Bring some books, a stuffed animal or your own pet, and come read with us! Caregivers can post their child’s first name and city in the comments section on Youtube, along with the book they are reading, and we’ll read off as many of those names as we can, live, during the break we need to give the dogs. Each week you register we’ll send you your dog bone "punch cards". These will be dated dog bones your child can color and email to us. The following week, we’ll display them live on the feed. This will also be recorded so if you can’t make it live, the dogs will still be there for you.

LEGO Building Challenge • Wednesday June 10 & 17 • 12:00 pm • Via Zoom

Register each week via our Online Calendar to receive the current challenge.  Complete the task using common Lego pieces, then post a photo of your creation on our SCPL Lego Build Challenge Facebook Group.  Just ask to join and we'll let you in the group!

NorCal Bats • Friday June 12 • 11:00 am AND 2:30 pm • Via Zoom

Here's your chance if you missed our Kickoff Event. Bats have a pretty bad reputation, especially now. But they are actually beneficial creatures in many ways. Join us for a live interactive program via Zoom with NorCal Bats, who are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of bats throughout Northern California. Live bats will be presented along with a slide show geared to dispel myths and prejudices against bats that can lead to the destruction of their roosts and colonies.

Sean's Music Factory • Wednesday June 17 • 11:00 am AND 3:00 pm • Via Zoom

Sean Mendelson, aka "Teacher Sean" is a singer/songwriter, recording artist, and Music Together/Kids Sing Teacher. The band, Sean's Music Factory is made up of Sean Mendelson, Logan and Jillian, Puppet Sean, The Tickle Monster, and the audience! Sean's Music Factory performs unique, high energy shows throughout the Bay Area for children of all ages.

Programs for Teens:

Teen Dungeons and Dragons • Friday June 12 • 1:00 pm • Via Discord

Join SCPL for a weekly Dungeons & Dragons campaign where you can explore cool worlds, create interesting characters, stretch your imagination, and practice your storytelling skills. Whether you've been playing for a while or are new to the game, there's a place for everyone here. This program is for teens age 13-17 and requires registration for access link. We'll be using Discord as our platform. Registrants should try to make it to every session.

Author Talk with Dashka Slater • Saturday June 13 • 10:00 am • Via Zoom.

Best-selling author Dashka Slater has been telling stories since she could talk. An award-winning journalist who writes for such publications as The New York Times Magazine and Mother Jones, she is also the author of nine books of fiction and non-fiction for children and adults. Her true crime narrative, The 57 Bus, is winner of the 2018 Stonewall Book Award and a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor. Dashka will discuss her work, process, life, The 57 Bus, and related topics. The 57 Bus is the true story of two teenagers and the crime that changed their lives.

Programs for Adults:

Board in the Library • Sunday June 7 AND Saturday June 13  • 12:00 pm • Via Zoom

Adults need playtime too! Come play with us for hours of virtual tabletop gaming fun. Every other Saturday and Sunday noon to 5pm. Bring your favorite board game or play some of the library's many games. No prior gaming experience is necessary. Registration is required for access link. Conversation of games will happen over Discord. Games will take place over Steam and Board Game Arena.

Speed Sketching • Tuesday June 9 & 16 • 2:00 pm • Via Zoom

Come with paper and pencil and try your hand at speed sketching. All levels of artistic experience are welcome. Prior to beginning the program, please select an object in your home and place it in view of your computers camera and let’s have fun together and see who can draw the silliest, stylish, true to life, or abstract interpretation of it. Every Tuesday afternoon at 2, take a break out of your day for some fun!

Conversations for Change: Work, Workers, and the Future of Work

Tuesday June 9 • 5:15 pm • Via Zoom

The conversations are designed to foster greater understanding among individuals who may have different viewpoints. Participants in these small group conversations, guided by a trained host, practice being open and curious about all perspectives, with a focus on learning from one another. Prior to registering, please review the Conversation Agreements.

People & Stories: Reading Deeply in Community • Wednesday June 10 • 1:30 pm • Via Zoom

People & Stories is dedicated to opening doors to literature for new audiences. Through oral readings and rigorous discussions of enduring short stories, we invite participants to find fresh understandings of themselves, of others, and of the world. Please note that some stories contain themes and language of an adult nature. We invite you to our special 8 week session on Zoom! Drop in for one or attend all 8 People & Stories sessions!

Virtual Trivia on Tap • Thursday June 18 • 6:00 pm • Via Zoom

This beloved weekly library program is now available from the comfort of your home so grab a cold (or warm) beverage, a pencil, and a sheet of paper, and let's do some trivia every Thursday! If you wish to work with a group of your choice please make sure each participant is logged in 5-10 minutes before the program begins and tell the host who you'd like in your team. Teams can have no more than 4 people.

Community Resilience Project: Housing Is Health Care • Wednesday June 17 • 6:00 pm • Via Zoom

Join critical service providers for a discussion on how, we as a community, can build community resilience during the current crisis. The first in this monthly series will focus on Housing Is Health Care and asks us to consider how we can come out of this crisis stronger than before. We invite people from all walks of life to come with questions and ideas to help us build a more resilient community. Panelists include:

  • Whitney Barnes, Adult Protective Services, Santa Cruz County Human Services Department
  • Erika Cortes,Youth Homeless Response Team Program, Community Action Board (CAB)
  • Joey Crottogini, Manager of Homeless Persons Health Project (HPHP)
  • Phil Kramer, Executive Director of Housing Matters
  • Jared Lawson, Veterans Outreach Specialist at Housing Matters

Tech Talks: Zoom 101 • Thursday June 18 • 11:00 am • Via Zoom

Learn how to safely host a secure Zoom meeting. Safety settings, scheduling, and basic features will be covered to get you more familiarized using Zoom (Apple and Android). These are hands-on workshops that help us better understand our mobile devices. This event will be taking place online using Zoom.  For more information on accessing Zoom, visit Using Zoom.
