SCPL News

SCPL welcomes Susie Bright, Editor of Santa Cruz Noir and other distinguished writers who contributed to this work of regional noir tales Ariel Gore, Elizabeth McKenzie, and Micah Perks, to discuss their writing and read some brief excerpts from the collection.

Expect the second half of the program to include some audience engagement and Q&A with our distinguished panel of writers.

About the Authors

Susie Bright

Susie Bright is a best-selling author and editor who landed in Santa Cruz in 1979. Her previous short story collections include The Best American Erotica, Herotica, Bitten, and X. She is the host of the podcast In Bed with Susie Bright, author of the memoir Big Sex Little Death, and cowrote and choreographed the noir film Bound.

Elizabeth McKenzie

Elizabeth McKenzie is the author of The Portable Veblen, longlisted for the 2016 National Book Award for fiction, winner of the California Book Award, and finalist for the Baileys Prize. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Best American Nonrequired Reading, and the Pushcart Prize Anthology, and recorded for NPR’s Selected Shorts. Her collection, Stop That Girl, was short-listed for The Story Prize, and her novel MacGregor Tells the World was a Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle and Library Journal Best Book of the year.

Ariel Gore

Ariel Gore is a journalist, memoirist, novelist, nonfiction author, and teacher. She is the founding editor/publisher of Hip Mama, an Alternative Press Award-winning publication covering the culture and politics of motherhood. Through her work on Hip Mama, Gore is widely credited with launching maternal feminism and the contemporary mothers' movement. Gore's fiction and nonfiction work also explores creativity, spirituality, queer culture, and positive psychology.

Micah Perks

Micah Perks is an American fiction writer and memoirist. Her three books, We Are Gathered Here (St. Martin's Press 1997) , Pagan Time (Counterpoint Press 2001) , and What Becomes Us (Outpost19 Books 2016) examine the utopian impulse in U.S. history.
