Discovering the Connections between Stars, Cells and How Life Began

David Deamer will share his research into where life came from and how it began. David Deamer is a renowned Professor of Biomolecular Engineering at UCSC and author of Origins of Life (2010, with Jack Szostak) and First Life (2011).

Thursday • July 12
6:30pm - 8:00pm
Downtown Library • 224 Church St.
Upstairs meeting Room

Prof. Deamer's primary research interest concerns DNA transport through nanoscopic pores in membranes. This work focuses on developing an instrument that can analyze nucleic acids as individual molecules. Prof. Deamer also uses nanopore analysis in his second research interest, which concerns the process by which nucleic acids first emerged on the early Earth prior to the origin of cellular life. Results from these investigations are described in his two recently published books.

Citizen Science is a collaboration between the Santa Cruz Public Libraries; the Santa Cruz Children's Museum of Discovery (SCCMOD), and the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC).

We invite you to join us every first Thursday of the month for a presentation and Q&A with local experts and researchers in the field discussing life science, ecology, geology, genetics, climatology and more. Let’s connect, inspire and inform each other!
