Authors & Editors: Butting Heads or Holding Hands?

SCPL News

Join renowned editor Laurie Gibson as we explore the various levels of editing that contribute to a professional-caliber book. We'll scan the spectrum, ranging from work that can help clarify the author's thinking early in the creation stage (developmental editing), through the important stylistic and mechanical work that helps establish consistency (line editing and copyediting), and then the final polishing pass to ensure quality (proofreading).

We'll also discuss the dynamic between authors and editors, including some of the myths that flutter around the creative heat of conflict and drama. And we'll end on a high note by sharing some funny/embarrassing editing bloopers - and tips for avoiding making these same mistakes in your own writing.

Presenter Laurie Gibson, has served as editor for more than 150 first-time authors and also edited/proofread 250+ books for numerous publishers, including the 2003 edition of "The Color Purple," as well as the writing of former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and success guru Brian Tracy. For nearly a decade, Laurie also taught editing for the Extension programs of both UCSD and UCLA.

Can't make the workshop? Save the Dates: This workshop will also take place at the Aptos Library on September 23rd at 11am and at the Downtown Library on November 7th at 6pm.
