Sumi-e for the New Year

Celebrate the Year of the Rooster and enjoy a demonstration of sumi-e, a traditional Japanese art form rooted in Chinese calligraphy and brush painting. This ancient technique achieves a range of tonality and shading, from deep black to light silvery gray, by varying the proportion of ink to water, as well as the ink load on the brush and the pressure and angle of each brushstroke. Presented by local artist Carolyn Fitz.
