Why this project?

Santa Cruz Public Libraries wants to facilitate the creators of our local culture connecting with each other and the community, disseminating art, and contributing to the historical record. By helping musicians to grow their fan base, SoundSwell can have a positive impact on the local music scene. We are dedicated to supporting local musicians and building a collection that celebrates the richness and talent that makes our community so unique.

SoundSwell was created in partnership with Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios. The database has been live since June 3, 2014---Explore, listen and pass it on!

Who is included?

Don't see your favorite local band or musician's work represented? Tell them about this project! Have them contact us at Help us build the archive. Musicians gain exposure and are paid a small license fee for use of their work.

Local musicians interested in participating in SoundSwell should contact Diane Cowen, Virtual Services Librarian: by mail at Santa Cruz Public Libraries, 117 Union St. SC, 95060; by email at or by phone at 831-427-7706 x 7763.

How is it supported?

The SoundSwell project was initiated by our Virtual Services librarian Diane Cowen during the Eureka leadership program and supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Each artist is compensated $50 - $100 per album (depending on number of tracks) for inclusion in the collection.
