Subject Description

Senior Apartment Complexes

Apartment buildings and condominium complexes that make rental units available almost exclusively to individuals over a certain age, usually fifty-five. An individual's spouse or live-in caregiver may be exempted from the age requirement. Some buildings fall under federal guidelines, only accept low-income older adults and have long waiting lists; but most are privately owned and will accept anyone who meets the age requirements. Some complexes also provide a range of services for residents that are not typically available as a part of apartment living. These may include hospitality services such as an on-site activities program, van services or meals in a communal dining room, but generally do not include personal or health care services.
