Join us as we explore the various levels of editing that contribute to a professional-caliber book. We’ll scan the spectrum, ranging from work that can help clarify the author’s thinking early in the creation stage (developmental editing), through the important stylistic and mechanical work that helps establish consistency (line editing and copyediting), and then the final polishing pass to ensure quality (proofreading). We’ll also discuss the dynamic between authors and editors, including some of the myths that flutter around the creative heat of conflict and drama. And we’ll end on a high note by sharing some funny/embarrassing editing bloopers —- and tips for avoiding making these same mistakes in your own writing. Presenter: Laurie Gibson, editor of more than 150 first-time authors and also edited/proofread 250+ books for numerous publishers. For nearly a decade, Laurie has taught editing for the Extension programs of both UCSD and UCLA.
