First African-American U.S. Governor
The first African-American U.S. Governor was Lawrence Douglas Wilder. Wilder was elected on November 7th, 1989 to serve as Governor of Virginia.
During Governor Henry Clay Warmouth's impeachment, African-American Louisianan Lieutenant Governor Pickney Benton Stewart Pinchback served as Louisiana's governor from December 11, 1872 to January 14, 1873.
