Requesting Books and Other Media

September 2006

Requesting Library Items That Are Checked Out

All items which appear in the Library's online catalog, except reference books, can be reserved for you. A request can be used to hold an item for you when it is returned or to transfer an item from one branch library to another one that is more convenient for you.

Placing a Request

You may place requests for items listed in the online catalog one of the following ways:

When Your Request Comes In

You will be notified by the noticing option you have selected (phone, e-mail) when an item is in and being held for you. You may find out the specific title of the item on hold for you by calling Teleservice at 420-5775. You can also check by accessing your Library account online. If you no longer want the item or can't pick it up by the date shown, call your branch library to cancel the request. See branch information for phone numbers. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CANCEL A REQUEST BY REPLYING TO THIS EMAIL. YOU MUST CALL YOUR BRANCH TO CANCEL A REQUEST.

Requesting Magazines

Magazines that may be checked out may be reserved, too. You can place magazine requests in person at any of the branch libraries.

Is There a Charge?

Our Request Service is free for items that the Library owns or decides to purchase.

What About Books the Library Doesn't Own?

Items that the Library does not own may be requested by filling out a form at any branch library or by calling Telephone Reference at 420-5730. We will consider purchasing the item, or we will attempt to borrow it from another library system for your use. The Santa Cruz Public Libraries does not charge for this service; however, about 10% of the lending libraries do charge fees and those fees are passed on to the person requesting the item.
