Internet Access

Internet access is available at all branch libraries during open hours, either through the Library's equipment, or a user's personal laptop computer using a wireless connection (WiFi). All branches have at least one Internet workstation. Each branch has its own rules for signing up and for length of time allowed. Call the branch in question to find out its requirements and rules. Fees for patrons who log on as a "guest" because they don't have a Santa Cruz Public Library card are:

The Library System imposes rules regarding use of the Internet, just as it does other materials and services. The rules for the Internet include the following:

While protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, sexually graphic Internet sites are best suited for private viewing. The Library is a public space. Therefore, viewing sexually graphic Internet sites in the Library is inappropriate. Library users who do so will be asked to stop immediately.

The purpose of the Internet terminals is to provide access to the World Wide Web and telnet. Newsgroups are not available. The Library does not provide e-mail accounts. However, e-mail accounts are available through several web sites.

There is no FTP from Library Internet terminals nor is there downloading to the hard drive.

For all patrons, word proccessing and spreadsheet access is available on the library internet computers at Google Docs & Spreadsheets.

For children, word processing is available on the Gates' grant electronic homework centers at the Garfield Park, Scotts Valley, Live Oak, Aptos, and Central branches.
