June's discussion concludes another great season for Science Matters. We will be resuming this discussion series in September. Thanks to Janis O'Driscoll, Santa Cruz Public Library Youth Services Director and Victoria Welborn, Science Librarian at UCSC for all their hard work in organizing the event. Also, many thanks to all of the discussion leaders who gave their time and expertise.

Science Matters is a program for non-scientists who want to explore discoveries in the world around them and would like the help of a scientist to understand.

The Science Matters Bookclub meets once a month, generally the third Sunday of each month. One book will be chosen for each session, and a member of the local scientific community will be on hand to lead the discussion and answer questions. Books discussed will be chosen by the scientists.

The Science Matters Bookclub aims to provide interesting reading and dicussion that demonstrate how science really works. This Bookclub was created to increase science literacy in Santa Cruz County and the Monterey Bay area by:

Books selected will be appropriate for the "lay" or non-technical reader. The target reading audience is high school through adult. Local libraries may own copies of the selected books, however some readers will probably want to purchase their own copies. We encourage readers to buy books from one of Santa Cruz County's independent booksellers. The Capitola Bookcafé offers a 10% discount to attendees for bookclub books, and has an online order form. [Be sure to tell them you're a Science Matters Bookclub member to receive your discount.]

The Santa Cruz Public Library System does not discriminate against persons with disabilities. If you wish to attend this program and you will require special assistance such as sign language, a reader, or other special assistance or devices in order to attend and participate, please call Janis O'Driscoll (Voice: 420-5662) seven (7) days prior to the event to make arrangements for assistance.
