The massive Father Serra statute overlooks the Junipero Serra Freeway (I-280), near the Hillsborough rest stop. The statue points to the trail used by the missionaries as they moved north. His hand and sleeve form the image of a donkey, representative of the father's transportation.
The statue is at least 20 feet high. The newspaper accounts cited below give the height as either 20, 22, or 26 feet. Weighing at least 20 tons, 7 tons of which are in the base, the sculpture is made of ferro cement over a metal and wire frame. It was created by Louis DuBois, who donated his labor and the materials.
