Ready Reference Files
Here are three possible ways to check on the value of old, defunct, or obscure stocks:
- Call a stock broker. Many brokers have the Financial Stock Guide Service, which helps in stock searching. This is probably not a free service.
- Call or write a stock searching company. For a fee they will search inactive, unlisted and obscure securities.
Two such companies are is R.M. Smythe. (http://www.smytheonline.com/) and Stock Search International (http://www.stocksearchintl.com/)
The Library does not recommend nor endorse either company.
- To determine if old stock certificates were issued by a company still in
existence, write to the Secretary of State of the state in which the stock was issued. This is a free service.
