New Almaden Quicksilver Mines

The New Almaden Quicksilver mines were located in Santa Clara County, a few miles south of San Jose. The New Almaden mine proper, registered in 1845, was older than any gold mine in the state; it operated over a longer period of time, from 1840's to 1940's; and yielded metal of greater total value than any other metal mine in California. It produced over 76 million pounds of quicksilver (mercury).
