Halley's Comet 1910

The Whistling Season

Title: The Whistling Season
By: Ivan Doig

The setting is 1910 in Marias Coulee, CO and a family consisting of a widower and his three young sons are in desperate need of a housekeeper so the father answers an ad from the weekly newspaper that begins "Can't Cook But Doesn't Bite." Thus begins the memory of an incredible year in the life of the 13 year old narrator. The new housekeeper also brings her brother who assumes the teaching position in the one room schoolhouse because the young teacher has run off to get married. Adding another layer of richness to this delightfully told story is the buildup to the appearance of Halley's Comet.
