Short Stories in a Northern Setting
Title: Island: The Complete Short Stories
By: Alistair MacLeod
Modern Library named Canadian author Alistair MacLeod one of the greatest writers in the English language since 1950. After spending some time with this collection of stories, it is clear why.
These short stories, set for the most part in the stark but evocative landscape of Cape Breton Island, are beautifully written. They follow the lives and relationships of people who are bound to tradition and memory--lives that seem at first very simple but which are actually deeply complex. The stories bring together past and present, myth and reality, in a spellbinding setting. They are a treat for anyone who enjoys great writing.

I agree with you!!
I read MacLeod's novel and liked it so much I picked up this book of short stories. They're so well written they're breath taking.
