You have probably noticed that most of the URLs (addresses) on the Internet start with "http:" These letters tell your computer what protocol (method or rules) to use to connect to another computer on the Internet. In this example, http stands for hypertext transfer protocol. Another protocol for connecting one computer to another is telnet. In order for you to connect to another computer using telnet protocol, you need a telnet program on your personal computer.
The connection from the Library's website to the Library's online catalog looks like a regular link. But, it isn't. It is a telnet link. There should be no problem if the telnet program is already on your computer and if your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) knows where the telnet application is. When you click on the link, the telnet program should launch automatically. You then type the username (infocruz) and you get into the catalog.
If the telnet link does not work, maybe you do not have telnet software on your computer. If that's the case, you will have to download telnet software from the Internet.
Unfortunately, there are so many variables when it comes to computers that the Library cannot provide you with specific technical support. However, we can make a couple of general suggestions to try.
1. Go to Internet Explorer's address bar (called the Location bar in Netscape) and type: telnet://63.193.16.1 and hit enter. You should connect to the catalog. Username is infocruz.
2. Bypass your browser and connect to the Library's catalog by using a telnet program directly. To do this, you would simply find your telnet application and open it. Put in the Library catalog address: 63.193.16.1 and connect. The username is infocruz.
For example, for Windows users, this would mean going to the telnet application that came with Windows. Go to the start menu and select run. Type: telnet and click on OK. Select connect/ remote system. In the dialog box put:
When you connect, the username is infocruz.
