What is RSS? RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a means of keeping up with changing content on a website. Instead of repeatedly visiting a website and browsing for fresh content, you can "subscribe" to a site's RSS feeds and be alerted to changes through an aggregator or RSS reader. RSS feeds are generally identified by an orange XML button (such as those on the right side of this page). How do I use RSS? To make use of RSS feeds you need a reader capable of displaying their content. This may be a free web-based reader like Bloglines or NewsGator or an installed application such as FeedDemon (Windows) or NewsFire (Mac). Once you have set up your reader, you can subscribe to a feed by clicking on the appropriate orange XML button and copying the RSS URL (in the address bar of your browser) into your reader. ...Adding RSS feeds to Google and My Yahoo!: It is also possible to view RSS feeds on personalized Google or Yahoo! homepages. Here's how... If you have a Google homepage, copy the RSS URL from one of the XML buttons on the right. On your Google homepage, click "Add Content." Next, click the "Add by URL" link and paste your RSS URL into the text box. Click the "Add" button to finish the process. For My Yahoo!, copy the RSS URL from one of the XML buttons on the right. On your My Yahoo! homepage, click "Add Content." Click the "Add RSS by URL" link and paste your RSS URL into the text box. Click "Add" to finish the process. ...RSS feeds in Mozilla Firefox: A number of browsers (including Firefox and Opera) also have the ability to read RSS feeds. Mozilla Firefox uses "Live Bookmarks" to load content from RSS feeds into the Bookmarks menu. To add a new "Live Bookmark," open the Bookmarks Manager, highlight the folder where you would like to create the bookmark, then select "File" and "New Live Bookmark." Paste the RSS URL (copied from one of the XML buttons on the right) into the "Feed Location" box and give it a name. Clicking on that bookmark will now give you a list of all newly inventoried items in the selected category--this list will be updated automatically as new titles are added to our database. Selecting a title from within your Live Bookmark will take you to the Full Record display for that item in the Library Catalog--where you can check availability and place a request. If you use Firefox to browse lists of newly inventoried titles, you will also notice a small icon ( | Available Feeds: Adult Collection:
