SCPL Celebrates 3 Awards!
Heather Norquist - 2011 Barbara Bricmont Award
Youth Services Librarian, Heather Norquist, has been awarded the 2011 Barbara Bricmont award by the Santa Cruz County Reading Association. The award is given to "librarians in our community who go above and beyond to offer literacy services to young children." We are very proud of the work Heather does for families in Live Oak.
Linda White - 2011 Community Award
Retired Library storyteller, Linda White, has been awarded the 2011 Community Award by the Santa Cruz County Reading Association. Linda continues to tell stories at Branciforte, Central, and Garfield Park Branches as a volunteer and Linda is being honored for her joyful service to families in her community. SCPL is forever proud to count Linda as one of our own.
SCPL - 2011 Organizational Ally to Queer Youth Award
SCPL is honored and humbled to accept the 2011 Organizational Ally to Queer Youth Award. At the banquet on May 14, we were in the presence of inspiring and amazing young people and pledge to strive every day to be the safe and positive place all our SC County young people deserve. Try BookFlix - an Online Reading Program for Kids!
SCPL has subscribed to a fun, new reading program that you and your child can access from the library or home (requires a library card)! Scholastic BookFlix pairs classic video storybooks from Weston Woods with related nonfiction eBooks from Scholastic to build a love of reading and learning. This resource for children in grades PreK-3 will help early readers develop and practice essential reading skills. It includes:
- 95 classic video storybooks each paired with a related nonfiction eBook.
- Spanish language versions of 27 pairs.
- Read-aloud supports so students can hear each book narrated and also hear definitions of key words and directions for each activity.
- Educational games and activities so children can show what they have learned.
- Safe, age-appropriate web links selected by Scholastic's editors so kids can extend their learning on a topic.
- Meet the author section to learn more about the author of each fiction book.
BookFlix is specifically created to support non-, beginning and reluctant readers.

Morningstar Investment Research Center Now Available Online!
SCPL patrons interested in stocks and funds now have access to Morningstar's premium information online. This includes Morningstar analysts' independent opinion on 1,700 stocks, 2,200 mutual funds, and 300 exchange rated funds.
Morningstar Investment Research Center also offers accurate, up-to-date data on 35,000 stocks and funds, along with industry and market data. The database lets users build and test portfolio ideas online, and provides financial education through its Investing Classroom.
Please note that remote access requires authentication using your library card and PIN.
