Business Agent – Private Sector (Parking)

Union Overview

Teamsters Local 911 is pleased to announce the Business Agent – Private Sector (Parking) position to be filled as soon as possible.

This position offers a unique opportunity to play a leadership role representing private sector workers employed with various parking employers throughout Southern California. The Union is currently seeking to fill one position to represent workers in bargaining units within Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange Counties. The Union office is located in Bellflower, California. The position will be responsible to represent the interests of Teamsters Local 911, its officers, members and staff at all times with Employers, State Federations, area Labor Councils, affiliates and constituency groups and will report to the Secretary‐Treasurer.

Business Agents are considered ‘at will – exempt’ in that they will be responsible to lead and oversee the work of shop stewards, union activists and volunteers in the areas of wages, benefits and working conditions; have access to confidential information; formulate and administer policies and programs; contribute significantly to management positions for internal and external union operations; and exercise independent judgment and decision making authority.

Description of Duties

 Work independently with little to no supervision representing members in the areas of wages, benefits and working conditions on a daily basis
 Prepare and present grievance cases as the principal Union advocate
 Represent the Union in meet and confer issues; Ability to act as lead negotiator in bargaining with private sector employers
 Assess, groom and train Union stewards who can assist members in solving problems on the job through contract enforcement and direct action
 Develop and maintain positive relationships with labor relations counterparts, elected officials, local labor leaders, and community organizations
 Facilitate special and general membership meetings with workers at their jobsite; plan and attend various meetings in the region with elected leaders at the State and local level; attend special meetings such as budget hearings, planning meetings and political events
 Plan and direct internal and external organizing campaigns for ongoing Union strength and contract renewal; engage worksite leaders for special projects, committees, and volunteer opportunities
 Welcome new members and provide in person orientation about the importance of the Union
 Develop expertise on employment trends and regional issues, and communicate with the Secretary‐Treasurer, fellow Business Agents, and shop stewards
 Ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective working relationships
 Conduct research, compile, interpret, analyze data, and make recommendations
 Develop, implement and drive worksite and community mobilization strategies; Ability to manage campaigns both large and small
 Prepare leaflets, bulletins, etc. for communication with membership
 Prepare and submit regular and ad hoc reports on regional activities as required
 Act as a liaison to other unions, labor coalitions, etc.

Minimum Requirements

2 or more years experience as a Union representative in the private sector is required. Knowledge of parking employers, and the bidding and selection process for parking contracts is desired
Experience acting as a principal Union steward may be substituted for the 2 year requirement if significant in nature
Experience preparing and presenting grievances as the principal Union advocate;

Experience preparing unresolved grievance cases for arbitration
Ability to communicate in English and Spanish a must
Experience with internal and external organizing campaigns
Experience planning and implementing political actions such as long term informational picketing and public demonstrations
Experience working for an International Union or very large local Union with multiple contracts and bargaining units
College degree in labor‐related field desired
Must possess effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks
Ability to lead and support organizational change efforts for large complex organizations
Strong public speaking skills and experience communicating union messages a must
Computer proficiency with database/spreadsheet, email, internet, word processing, & social media
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent listening, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
Ability to work long and irregular hours and sometimes on weekends
Ability to travel as needed, and for extended periods
Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and automobile for business use is required

Compensation
Teamsters Local 911 offers competitive salary commensurate with work experience. In addition medical, dental, vision, life insurance, pension and 401k will be offered. A company vehicle may be provided.
