Business Agent/Organizer


The OFFICE & PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION (OPEIU), LOCAL 6, AFL-CIO  is a dynamic, progressive labor union for professional, technical, healthcare, and office workers who recognize the value of having a voice at their work places and the need for social justice.

OPEIU Local 6 represents members in the greater Boston area and throughout New England, with its headquarters in Quincy, Massachusetts.

OPEIU Local 6 is seeking a full-time Business Agent/Organizer to represent and organize workers, and negotiate strong collective-bargaining agreements. Responsibilities include:

• Negotiating and administering collective-bargaining agreements in private and public sectors
• Organizing internal and external members through campaigns and community activism
• Developing rank and file leadership
• Handling and investigating grievances up through arbitration
• Engaging in member communication and outreach using a variety of media, including e-mail, website, and personal communication
• Coordinating and maintaining shop stewards, providing training and support
• Utilizing mediation and performing dispute resolution
• Attending and leading regular bargaining-unit meetings

Requirements include:

• Strong negotiation and organizing skills, with a demonstrated success at contract negotiations and organizing new members
• Effective written and oral communication skills (including correspondence, dispute resolution, publications, and presentations)
• Ability to manage and prioritize workload; and ability to work independently
• Willingness and ability to travel throughout New England, and to work nontraditional hours including nights and weekends
• Ability to work in demanding situations with initiative, tenacity, and composure
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Experience as a union representative/organizer or proven ability to perform the duties of the position
• Valid driver’s license, automobile, and valid automobile insurance

Salary and Benefits: Salary depending on experience; benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance, automobile stipend, legal plan, 401(k) plan, and defined benefit plan
