Job Description:
Associate Executive Director for Advocacy & Affiliate Services
RESPONSIBLE TO: OEA Executive Director
General Description of the Position:
The Associate Executive Director for Advocacy and Affiliate Services is the leader of the field operation and the bargaining program of the OEA. Duties include the supervision of the Bargaining Coordinator and all UniServ consultants.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Supervises and evaluates OEA UniServ staff and coordinates assistance and support in carrying out their responsibilities.
2. Directs and leads the bargaining and field advocacy program of the Oregon Education Association.
3. Works in collaboration with other OEA Center Directors and staff in the development and implementation of OEA organizing activities and campaigns
4. Coordinates new affiliate organizing program of the OEA.
5. Serves as liaison to the National Education Association in the coordination of NEA support of the state advocacy, bargaining and other affiliate services programs.
6. Oversees and coordinates the work of the Cabinet for the Center for Advocacy & Affiliate Services.
7. Directs staff and manages resources in support of the activities of the Oregon Council of Education Support Professionals (OCESP).
8. Manages, directs, and evaluates all activities of the OEA Bargaining Coordinator in support of the OEA bargaining program. Directs the research activities of the Bargaining Coordinator in support of the bargaining and field advocacy programs of the OEA.
9. Develops the budget and manages all funds assigned to the Center for Advocacy and Affiliate Services.
10. Works with the Executive Director in filling vacancies in positions within the Center for Advocacy and Affiliate Services.
11. Works with the General Counsel in overseeing the use of legal services program for members and staff.
12. Coordinates and collaborates with the Center for Public Affairs to implement the field component of OEA political program.
13. Coordinates and collaborates with the OEA Union School in developing education and training programs for leaders, members and staff.
14. Works with the members of the OEA management team in a collaborative manner.
15. Travels extensively in state; occasionally travels out-of-state.
16. Carries out other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s preferred.
2. Extensive experience as a UniServ consultant and/or similar union positions.
3. Collective bargaining, advocacy and organizing experience including bargaining crisis situations.
4. Experience in developing and leading successful internal and/or external organizing campaigns.
5. Experience managing and leading groups of staff and/or union leaders-members.
6. Experience directing and applying relevant research in support of bargaining and organizing.
7. Experience in working with difficult situations and people along with the ability to solve problems.
8. Ability to get along with others and to work collaboratively with people who have diverse viewpoints.
9. Knowledge of and experience with technology and electronic communications.
10. Valid driver’s license. Ability to drive for work-related purposes on a regular basis.
