JOB POSTING
Title: Senior Organizer/ New Organizing
Division: Organizing
Purpose: To assist the leadership of Local 615 in building a powerful rank and file union, through organizing and representing workers within the union’s jurisdiction.
The Senior Organizer/New Organizing will work with the Organizing Department under the supervision of the Organizing Director, in coordination with Commercial, Higher Education and other departments, to:
Duties and Responsibilities:
A Senior Organizer performs a range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the overall program, a specific campaign, or needs of the local as determined by the officers. The list below captures some (not all) of the duties and responsibilities of a Senior Organizer:
• Work with the director(s) to drive and develop the direction of the overall program
• Develop and execute a monthly work plan with minimal supervision
• Overall management and development of recognition or contract campaigns and fight back campaigns, including leading the day to day work of staff and members
• Develop and implement tactics appropriate to the given campaign strategy
• Motivate, train and mentor staff and leaders in the effective execution of their assigned duties and responsibilities.
• Lead and/or coordinate brigades
• Lead and/or coordinate actions including pickets, strikes, and rallies, and train other staff to do the same.
• Assure the accuracy of lists, records, databases and wall charts related to campaign assignments.
• Coordinate legal strategies as assigned
• Communicate problems and concerns to the division director
• Handle employer relations work, as assigned be division director.
• Respect the processes of the organization and to work within its framework to resolve internal disputes and issues.
The Senior Organizer may be assigned other duties not included in this job description as required by the organization.
Requirements:
In addition to the above listed job duties and responsibilities, the following are conditions and requirements of the job:
1) Mastery of the duties & responsibilities of an Organizer 2
2) Valid driving license and a working car with insurance
3) Ability to speak a primary language of the workers in the assigned area and to communicate effectively in English
4) Dress appropriately for given job assignments
5) Ability to travel between various sites in short time periods, ascend flights of stairs, and participate in marches and demonstrations of at least 3 hours in duration
6) Willingness and ability to travel within and outside of the local union’s jurisdiction for the purposes of campaign work, support work for national union priorities and education/training
Additional Criteria for Evaluation:
Staff will be evaluated on their ability and skill in assisting Local 615 to organize and represent workers successfully, and on their effectiveness at the above listed job duties. A Senior Organizer should be able to: work independently; work with other staff and members during campaigns; balance conflicting demands successfully; meet the goals set for their assignment; and work according to deadlines.
Working Conditions:
A Senior Organizer is required to work long and irregular hours including work on weekends and on holidays as necessary. Organizers should be available during the times that workers in their assigned area are available at their work site, home or other locale. The work of a Union organizer necessitates flexibility as demands and priorities for a particular campaign or the overall organization shift.
