Job Opening: California Director
The BlueGreen Alliance is an innovative national partnership between ten national labor unions and four national environmental organizations. One of its principal objectives is to advocate for policies and programs at the national and state level that address climate change through expanding key sectors of the clean economy. These include renewable energy, energy efficiency, clean energy manufacturing, water efficiency, sustainable transportation and green chemistry. In California, a key priority is to advance the full and timely implementation of the groundbreaking climate law AB 32, as well as to support new legislative and agency initiatives that grow the clean energy economy, reduce carbon emissions and expand infrastructure to build resilience to climate impacts.
Job Summary:
BGA seeks a California Director who will lead the program and policy work of the BlueGreen Alliance in the state and develop regional growth strategies. A key role of the California Director is to work closely with our fourteen labor and environmental partners in strengthening our state‐wide steering committee and its initiatives, campaigns and legislative strategy. While principally focused on state‐level policy, the CA BGA also engages in federal, regional and city‐based clean energy initiatives. The California Director reports to National Campaigns Director, and also works directly with the Executive Director. The position is based in either the Bay Area or Sacramento.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Design and lead the implementation of a plan to expand the initiatives of the CA BlueGreen Alliance Steering Committee to build the clean economy and increase collaborative efforts of labor and environmental organizations across a range of issues. The California Director will:

Identify and assess opportunities for BGA to influence the growth of the clean energy economy and accelerate climate solutions in California.

Expand BGA’s work in the area of public health and green chemistry.

Lead BGA’s work in defense of labor rights in CA, including access to collective bargaining, labor standards in government procurement, and full participation in electoral activity.

Lead BGA’s state legislative and policy initiatives, in collaboration with BGA’s California staff and partners.

Lead and supervise the work of California’s BGA’s staff.

Act as the spokesperson for the BlueGreen Alliance in California in such areas as communication with government officials, engagement with partner leaders, media communications and foundation engagement.

Work closely with BlueGreen Alliance partners to strategically engage them in the development and implementation of policy, program and campaign initiatives.

Collaborate with clean economy businesses to advance clean economy growth, and‐‐in collaboration with our Labor and environmental partners‐‐‐work with other businesses in the energy sector that are working to reduce carbon emissions through industrial energy efficiency.

Work with national BGA legislative staff to foster connectivity between California’s clean energy and climate work and national priorities and opportunities.

Work with BGA’s national communications team to develop and implement a California communications plan.

Work with national BGA communications and field staff to build our online engagement of members and allies in California.

Form strategic partnerships in developing initiatives that leverage BlueGreen Alliance resources and amplify organizational impact, including key allied

constituencies (e.g. communities of colors, highly impacted communities, etc)

Work to ensure that that the Blue Green Alliance national Good Jobs, Green Jobs conference reflects the clean economy leadership taking place in California through participation of key stakeholders in the conference program, including a strong turn‐out of California partners and allies.

Work with BGA’s development staff to craft fundraising proposals and reports

Participate in planning efforts for the annual California‐based Right Stuff Awards Dinner.
Skills and Qualifications:
-
A strong foundation in developing and leading campaigns that involve multiple partners and stakeholders, including labor unions, environmental organizations and supportive businesses.

Demonstrated experience in campaign‐related policy development, including analyzing legislation and other policy tools, legislative outreach, and effective messaging.

6‐8 years’ experience developing and driving issue‐based campaigns.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, including experience in public presentations.

Strong managerial skills, and ability to maintain productive working relationships remotely.

Excellent interpersonal skills, and strong orientation to building collaborative structures and relationships.

Previous experience working with labor unions, closely or directly is required.

Experience working on clean energy, climate change and other environmental issues.
