Senior Community / Political Organizer

SEIU-USWW is currently seeking a dynamic candidate for the position of Sr. Community/Political Organizer to be part of our Northern California team based out of our Oakland office. The Sr. Community/Political Organizer, under the direction of the Political Director, works in community coalitions, and builds support among community groups and leaders for the Local’s strategic campaigns and objectives.
 
SEIU United Service Workers West represents over 40,000 service workers across California. We have been on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage workers in service industries and in leading the fight for social justice on issues such as health care, housing, and immigration, and education reform.

  SOME KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Typical Tasks: All duties listed are required, but may or may not be continuously performed or ongoing at any specific time.  This list is not necessarily all-inclusive:

• Outreach to community organizations, politicians, and clients to support campaign or area program; turnout community and political supporters to events.
• Attend and/or speak at community and political functions as a representative and spokesperson of USWW.
• Coordinate union involvement in electoral and political fundraising work.
• Independently conduct community meetings with politicians, community members, and organizations; develop agenda; coordinate large community functions (e.g. community hearings).
• Function at excelled level of leadership as Field Organizer in Electoral Campaign.
• Develop overall strategy for building, maintaining, and mobilizing community and political support on a campaign or in an area program.
• Create opportunities to link union leadership with key community and political entities or players; handle sensitive political situations and relationships with community and political allies; build strength of the union within the political and community arenas.
• Develop policy positions regarding a variety of issues of importance to membership such as housing or immigration reform.
• Submit reports and communication structure with campaign or area coordinator/director.
• Supervise staff, lost-timers, and volunteers.


  SOME OF THE JOB REQUIREMENTS
• Commitment to social justice
• Experience in community organizing campaigns
• Ability to effectively plan and implement work and manage time, as part of a team and individually
• Ability to travel to other work sites in California and out of state.  Ability to work long and irregular and extended hours
• Experience and knowledge of computer programs (including word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet and database software)
• Driver’s license and reliable car

• Salary is competitive and negotiable (based on the Staff Union Contract)
