Job Description


Position Purpose:

Under the direction of the Education Director, the position is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of a 21st century member and staff training and education programs. The position is also responsible for working with the leadership to identify training and education needs and prepare member and staff training teams.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Delivery of Programs and curricula: Design, develop and deliver 21st century curricula for members, staff and partners on a wide variety of topics aligned with the vision and goals of the local including, but not limited to, new member orientation, leadership development; member engagement; contract campaigns, train-the-trainer, communications, conducting meetings, industry programs and structures; working in teams; visioning; organization building/creating a new culture; coalition building; electoral issues and fundraising campaigns, etc.

* Techniques: Utilize various techniques to create an environment for learning, build teamwork, and bring out the best in individuals.

* Creativity: Challenge traditional union training and education materials with an eye towards creativity, multi-sensory experience and new techniques and curriculum.

* Training Teams: Work with member and staff leadership to identify needs, provide opportunities for education at every level. Must develop “train the trainer” curriculum to expand our training resources.

* Coalition Building: Identify and develop working partnerships within organized labor, the adult education community and community organizations to expand our resources

* Administration: Maintain a calendar, which accurately documents past, present and future activities, visits, appointments in connection with work as training and education staff. Maintain accurate records, including activity reports.

• Perform other duties as required to support the department and mission of the organization.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong initiative and ability to work under pressure, with minimal supervision.
• Strong personal planning and time management skills
• Ability to exercise discretion and good independent judgment
• Ability to make effective use of union resources, technology and other available tools
• Basic computer literacy on Windows-based computer programs in order to perform necessary campaign data management and administrative work (create spreadsheets, data reports, and various presentations).
• At least two years experience in development and delivery of training and education programs for union members and staff is required.
• At least three  years experience in labor or non-profit organizations related to social and economic causes. Related experience will be given consideration.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
• Willingness and ability to travel
• Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance with business coverage, and an automobile for business use.

Physical requirements:
Long and extended hours and travel is required. Work is generally performed out in the field with members, staff and external constituents.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:

Education Coordinator may report to the Education Director, Organizing (external) director, Member Strength (internal) director or local union officer, other assigned supervisor. Supervision and direction often changes on a campaign-by-campaign or project-by-project basis. Education Coordinators are frequently expected to operate without day-to-day supervision, to develop their own work plans and goals, and to act with a great degree of discretion and independent judgment. Accordingly, they must be strong self-starters and have a commitment to fulfill the objectives of the organization.
