Laborers’ Local 78
LiUNA Local 78 is seeking applications for Director of Organizing. Laborers' Local 78 is one of the most progressive and aggressive Local Unions in the labor movement. We consist of 4,500 environmental remediation workers who work in New York, Long Island and New Jersey, most of whom are Latino or Eastern European. We have an engaged membership, high union market share, and work actively with community groups and other unions to push for a more progressive agenda in New York and New Jersey.
Job description
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a team that is paving the way for a new type of organizing for Building Trades Locals. The Director of Organizing is responsible to drive and shape an organizing program, including leading a staff of organizers, researchers, and political/community organizers in an overall strategic plan to organize non-union workers and contractors in growth sectors for the union. The Director of Organizing reports directly to the Business Manager of Laborers' Local 78 and will work with the local's senior leadership team to develop and execute external and internal organizing campaigns.
Job Requirements
• At least five (5) years of direct union organizing experience, including having run at least three campaigns and shown outstanding work in all aspects of work as Lead Organizer, Coordinator or equivalent position
• Minimum of three (3) years managing and training union organizers
• Experience running both non-NLRB election campaigns (i.e., comprehensive pressure campaigns) and NLRB election campaigns
• Must be able to evaluate and develop the work of other staff
• Ability to negotiate controversial political situations
• Ability to communicate in Spanish a plus
• Willingness to work long, irregular hours
Job Responsibilities
• Develop and implement strategic organizing plans in coordination with LEROF Research Director and LEROF Coordinators
• Supervise and evaluate the work of 15+ Organizers
• Where needed, serve as primary spokesperson in external organizing campaigns with employers, coalitions and elected officials
• Identify and oversee implementation of legal, community and policy strategies
• Develop, oversee, and monitor a staff development program that takes into account differing levels of experience, skill and knowledge.

• Excellent strategic planning skills including ability to lead staff and members in campaign planning and implementation
• Proven capacity to build strong teams and develop members as organizers
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write reports, make presentations, facilitate meetings, and conduct trainings
• Ability to manage in a manner which inspires, motivates, develops and maintains good working relations with diverse staff and Local 78's senior leadership team
• Knowledge of labor laws relating to the construction industry
• Literate in computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Word, and Access
