AFSCME Local Unions in Northern California are joined together in AFSCME District Council 57 to provide professional field representation, coordinated contract campaigns, political action and organizing. The Local Unions affiliated with AFSCME District Council 57 represent more than 20,000 public sector workers in 28 Local Unions. Members in affiliated Local Unions work for county governments, cities, school districts, special governmental districts and transportation agencies.

Position: Secretary III – Full Time

Location: Oakland Office 80 Swan Way Suite #110
Oakland, CA 94621 (location will vary)
Hours: 35 hours per week Monday-Friday

Our ideal candidate will be proactive in providing administrative support to various Staff and Local Leadership with the ability to identify and anticipate needs with at least three years related experience. Exceptional self-direction will be expected with the ability to handle an environment that is fast paced and periodically deadline driven. You must be able to multitask with a strong knowledge of various social networking such as, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Flickr, Web Posting and Email Blasts.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide varied secretarial and office administrative assistance to local union officers, members, supervisory and field staff in various locations.
  • Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Coordinating and cooperating with other Council offices and staff.
  • Composing correspondence independently or from brief instructions.
  • Organizing and maintaining accurate files and records.
  • Taking accurate and concise telephone messages.
  • Making arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy to produce spreadsheet and reports.
  • Operating standard office equipment, including a personal computer, multi-line telephone equipment, copier, folding machines and postage meter etc.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing communication as assigned.
  • Frequent travel to San Jose may be required to complete working assignment.


Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal, written and analytical skills;
  • Demonstrated proficient knowledge of Office 2013 (emphasis on Excel and Access). Internet Explorer 10 proficient.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.
  • Input and maintenance of membership data.
  • Ability to use the internet for information and fact finding.


Other Requirements:

Position requires the possession of a valid California driver’s license.
