AFT FULL-TIME ORGANIZER

Job Description:

This is a full-time position for a long-term, project organizer to work on organizing campaigns located in Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Pennsylvania.   Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists.  Union organizing experience a plus, but not required.  Student and community activists are strongly urged to apply.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Willing to work long and irregular hours
• Dedication to social and economic justice and public education
• Possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
• Ability to work with individuals different from one’s self
• Some experience in community, student, labor, or environmental activism is a plus
• Bilingual, especially Spanish/English, is a plus

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Organize and mobilize workers
• Attend daily and weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
• Make appointments for site/school visits, one-on-one visits, and other interaction with members and potential members
• Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a weekly basis
• Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required for short periods of time
• Take direction on daily and weekly activities to grow AFT membership and/or support
