
Flint Part-time Organizer
The Lecturers’ Employees Organization (LEO)AFT Michigan Local 6244, AFL-CIO, a progressive volunteer-based union of nontenure-track faculty at the University of Michigan (UM), is seeking to hire a part-time Organizer for the UM Flint campus. LEO represents over 1500 non tenure-track faculty with 300 unit members on the Flint campus. We are largely a volunteer organization with a strong organizing ethos.
Brief Description of Responsibilities
• Work with the campus leadership, lead organizer, and activist members to organize lecturers across the Flint UM campus at a 50% appointment
• Identify, recruit, and develop members to participate in organizing process
• Respond to the decisions of a volunteer-run organization
• Represent the Union to members and community
• Help manage membership data
LEO requires applicants to have:
• Organizing experience, especially related to unions, higher education, and/or political action
• Strong one-on-one organizing skills
• Ability to manage time and meet deadlines in high-stress situations
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
• Willingness to travel to other UM campuses on occasion
• Willingness to implement organizing plans as decided by Union Leadership
• Willingness to commit to the full academic year
• Ability to work independently and to facilitate group interactions
• Demonstrated ability to motivate others
• Ability to solve problems creatively
LEO prefers applicants to have:
• Experience with a volunteer-run organization
• Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
• Prior experience in a higher education environment
• Ability to work with office management and informational systems
• Basic computing knowledge
• Strong presence at membership meetings, rallies, and the like
• Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations
LEO is looking to hire applicants to begin August 26, 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications are being accepted through July 22, 2013. The annual salary range is $20,000- 25, 000 (for a 50% appointment), depending on prior experience, with annual raises. Healthcare benefits are negotiable.
