COMMUNITY & POLITICAL LEAD ORGANIZER
Position Description:
AFSCME Local 3299 is seeking a Lead Organizer to create and foster meaningful relationships with community partners that lead to joint action to advance collective bargaining rights for workers, protect vital public services, as well as advance other economic and social justicegoals. Under the supervision of 3299 Political Director and with the input of community allies and staff of the Local, he/she will develop and implement a plan to build and sustain effective relationships with community-based organizations around a shared vision for improving our communities and protecting workers’ rights.
Position Responsibilities:
• Work collaboratively with AFSCME International Union, Local 3299, and locals to map the community, survey members about existing community relationships, create a community engagement committee, and train the community engagement committee.
• Help develop and lead joint campaigns and partnerships with community allies to advance shared social and economic development goals.
• Build long-term relationships with community- and state-based organizations.
• Assist affiliate leaders in long-term planning to build strategic alliances.
• Represent AFSCME at meets and in dealings with outside organizations.
• Familiar with the California Central Valley demographics
• Other duties as assigned.
• Extensive travel is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Demonstrated skill as a community, labor or political organizer.
• Knowledge of the labor movement, including understanding of the principles of union organizing.
• Knowledge of AFSCME’s structure and the issues facing public service union members.
• Understanding of the principles of coalition building.
• Ability to assess and analyze complex political situations and respond appropriately.
• Experience in developing and executing written campaign plans is essential.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
• Ability to use initiative to execute projects that may be vaguely defined.
Physical Requirements (as required by ADA)
Work is performed in a variety of employment settings. Driving, travel, temporary assignments, irregular and extended work hours are required. Valid driver’s license and car required.
Language
Bilingual Spanish/English is preferred for this position.
