PSU-AAUP Internal Organizer Position

The Portland State University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (PSU-AAUP) has been the professional association and exclusive representative for the full time faculty and academic professionals at Portland State University since 1978. We are a strong independent labor association affiliated with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the Oregon Conference of the AAUP. In addition to our work at PSU, we advocate on behalf of higher education faculty at the Oregon University System and other state agencies including the Oregon Legislature.
A unique opportunity exists for an individual with the right mix of talents in organizing and higher education to help build and sustain a high level of member involvement at Portland State.

Purpose of the Position:
To build and activate the membership of PSU-AAUP, and potentially other work groups as and if assigned

Job Duties:
• Make contact with an agreed upon number of PSU-AAUP members and Fair Share Fee Payers weekly
• Assess bargaining unit members and record their support for the union and willingness to engage with union activities on the standard 1-5 scale.
• Recruit new members from both new and current employees
• Encourage attendance at PSU-AAUP events
• Recruit and support Unit reps
• Identify and establish relationships with faculty opinion leaders to mobilize action
• Refer members to AAUP resources to resolve work issues
• Attend staff (if applicable), Executive Council meetings, and other meetings as assigned
• Plan and support programs with member leaders that further the PSU-AAUP agenda
• Be in regular contact with supervisor, do daily contact reporting and monthly activity reporting on organizing activities and hours worked. Be accountable for outcomes and time worked
• Create flyers and organizing materials to support AAUP events and activities
• Collaborate with leaders of other unions and student leadership in creating events to support activism and solidarity in the Together 4 PSU movement as assigned
• Responsible for implementing projects, programs and campaigns as assigned
• Provide reports to the Executive Council on a regular basis on progress on projects, programs and campaigns
• Related duties as assigned

Job Requirements:
• Experience as an organizer and experience as a higher education faculty member preferred
• Articulate, intelligent, confident individual that presents well and related easily with higher education faculty
• Personal commitment to the mission and goals of PSU-AAUP and AAUP
• Ability to work independently but collaboratively, and to produce expected results with general supervision and limited support
• Ability to learn quickly the boundaries of the position
• Be adaptable and be able to accept changing priorities as assigned
• Ability to work collaborative and productively with member leaders
• Should be fluent with Microsoft Word and Excel as well as willing and able to learn new software programs as needed to facilitate organizing work
• PSU is an 18 hour/day operation. Ability to schedule time on campus as necessary to seek contact with faculty members as they are available
• Have Oregon Driver’s License and clean driving record
• Must be able to pass background check

Reports to: Executive Director

Location, Hours and Compensation:

Hours, Compensation and Benefits: This is a 12 month position. We are willing to be flexible for the right person between 15-29 hours per week. Hours of work to be set weekly in collaboration with supervisor around organizing activities. Salary is negotiable based upon experience, geared to a full-time equivalent of $45,000 to $55,000.

Benefits: Paid sick time, paid vacation. Phone Allowance. Exclusive Use of an Association laptop. Stipend to purchase individual health insurance if needed is negotiable.

Location: Most work to be performed on the Portland State University campus in downtown Portland. Occasionally events may be scheduled at other locations in Portland, other University campuses in Oregon, at the State Capitol in Salem, or other locations. No office can be provided at this time. This is a 100% field assignment.
