LEGISLATIVE MOBILIZATION COORDINATOR

LANSING, MI

AFT Michigan is seeking an experienced and energized legislative and political organizer to join a growing statewide union of educators. The Legislative Mobilization Coordinator is responsible for helping guide the organization’s legislative political trajectory, maintaining relationships with legislators, education advocates, and other organizations while supporting approximately 100 local unions across the state to develop and execute a coordinated legislative and political program.

This position is based in Lansing. The Legislative Mobilization Coordinator will be responsible for strengthening AFT Michigan by working with local affiliates to:
• Develop proactive statewide issues platforms and campaigns;
• Keep leaders and members up to date on legislative and policy issues by providing accessible and informative summaries of key issues;
• Enhance member mobilization around AFT Michigan issues campaigns;
• Support AFT Michigan political fundraising efforts;
• Enhance ongoing state lobbying efforts by building relationships with policymakers and staff;
• Work with staff and local leaders to develop and implement campaigns and build a stronger AFT Michigan;
• Train members in legislative, political action and mobilization skills;
• Conduct outreach to and coordinate with community groups and partner organizations to build support for public education;
• Maintain a well-run office;
• Manage special projects; and
• Other duties as assigned by the President.

Successful applicants will have most of the following qualifications:
• Independent project management skills, detail-oriented self-starter
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Media outreach and communications experience
• Knowledge of education and labor policy issues
• Five years of experience in organizing/advocacy in a union, social justice, or political context
• General computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media tools
• Ability to teach others the basics of legislative and political action
• Ability to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds
• Commitment to the organizing model of trade unionism
• Ability to listen actively and frame issues
• Willingness to work long hours and participate in union-wide activities
• College degree preferred
