Exciting Job Opening for WEC’s
Safe Recovery from Sandy Initiative

The New Jersey Work Environment Council (WEC) is a coalition of 70 labor, community, and environmental organizations, as well as occupational safety and health professionals, working for safe, secure jobs and a healthy, sustainable environment. WEC seeks a full time, experienced Communications Coordinator based in our Trenton, NJ office, opposite the State House. The position begins ASAP in Summer 2013 and concludes no later than December 31, 2014.
The person hired will coordinate a new public information and education campaign to help ensure a safe and healthy recovery from Superstorm Sandy. The initiative will address hazards, such as debris removal, mold, roof falls, and other construction dangers, as well as remedies, such as using OSHA. The target audiences are workers and volunteers, particularly in hard hit areas of New Jersey, such as shore communities.
Responsibilities
• Work with a team of people, including WEC’s Director, other WEC staff, and consultants to implement campaign activities.
• Conduct ongoing communications with the media (including newspapers, radio, TV, and social media) so this project may reach many thousands of people who face storm recovery and rebuilding hazards. This will include media appearances.
• Help edit various materials for lay audiences about hazard prevention.
• Coordinate outreach and preparation for training and educational workshops.
• Recruit volunteers to participate in grassroots information distribution “blitzes”.
• Lead collaboration with other organizations doing similar work.
• Help assess progress, maintain project documentation, and write reports to funders.
Qualifications
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate an initiative with many components.
• Experience in working with the media, including reporters and editors.
• Excellent verbal skills.
• Strong writing ability is essential (writing samples are required).
• Some knowledge of safety and health issues is helpful, but not required.
• Non-profit organizational experience a plus.
• Computer competency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
• A valid driver’s license and car access; travel within NJ is required.
• Ability to conduct outreach activities approximately two evenings a week and on occasional weekends.

Experience
Ideally, a minimum of two-three years of experience working in or with the media, communications, and/or project coordination experience.
The position is full time, based in Trenton. The salary range is $49,000 to $62,000. The position includes health care insurance and other benefits. The position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
