Job Description

SEIU Healthcare Illinois Indiana Missouri and Kansas is a dynamic, action-oriented union of over 90,000 healthcare and childcare workers. As one of the largest and fastest growing affiliates of the Service Employees International Union, SEIU HCIIMK is committed to building power for low and moderate income families by organizing low wage workers for economic and social justice.

Purpose:
The Organizer 1 is responsible for organizing low wage workers to build power at the workplace and in the community to win living wages and benefits, dignity and respect, and a voice in decisions that affect their lives. The Organizer 1 is responsible for the design, implementation and analysis of a wide variety of campaigns, including internal organizing with members to build a stronger union, and contract, community or political campaigns.

Location: Illinois and Indiana
Duties and Responsibilities:

• Leadership recruitment, development, and training
• Membership recruitment
• Turnout to membership events and activities
• Organizing membership meetings
• Supporting contract campaigns
• Community support; developing relationships with neighborhood or advocacy organizations
• Member representation
• Electoral and political organizing
• Other duties as assigned

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Organizer 1 must be able to organize his or her time, and develop and carry out plans with minimum supervision. S/he must also be able to receive direction from and interact with his or her immediate supervisor when it becomes necessary.

• Carry out assigned responsibilities in a competent and professional manner in keeping with the Local’s overall goals and expectations

Working Conditions:
The Organizer 1 may be required to work long and irregular hours, and to work on weekends and holidays when necessary.

Other Expectations:
All union staff is expected to respect the processes of the organization and to work within the framework of the organization to resolve internal disputes and issues.

Key Qualification Criteria:
• A strong commitment to social justice and the goals and principles of our union
• Ability to travel and work long and irregular hours, including weekends, early mornings and evenings as needed, and to work away from home for extended periods.
• Ability to develop and carry out work plans with minimal supervision
• Ability and skill to assist SEIU HCII to meet its goals of organizing and representing workers successfully
• Ability to balance conflicting demands successfully to complete duties in a broad range of areas and to carry out assigned and required tasks in a competent and professional manner, in keeping with SEIU HCII's overall goals and expectations.
• Ability to work with local union leaders and directors on organizing programs
• A willingness to move according to the needs of the organization
• An ability to work well with people of varied background
• Must be able to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines
• A high level of judgment, ability to take initiative, to work with a team
• Ability to work extremely independently while remaining accountable and responsible to member leadership, senior staff, and organizational goals
• The ability to strategize and implement plans in the context of a campaign
• General computer literacy with the ability to be trained as needed
