The Leading Edge of Human Rights in Agriculture
Compliance Monitor Position
The Fair Food Standards Council (FFSC) oversees statewide compliance with the Fair Food Program. This program emerged from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ (CIW) successful Campaign for Fair Food, a campaign to affirm the human rights of tomato workers and improve the conditions under which they labor.
The Fair Food Program consists of a human-rights-based Code of Conduct applicable throughout the Florida tomato industry and a tomato worker wage increase supported by a price premium paid by corporate purchasers of Florida tomatoes. The Code, developed by tomato workers, growers and corporate buyers, forms the foundation for a new model of social accountability.
FFSC Compliance Monitors conduct proactive audits of participating growers’ operations, including detailed interviews of field workers and management. Payroll reviews are conducted, in addition to monitoring of distribution of the Fair Food Program Premium. Monitors also receive, record and investigate complaints from workers through a 24-hour confidential complaint hotline. Compliance Monitors, working in teams, and together with the Executive Director, play a key role in drafting audit reports, investigating and resolving complaints, and designing corrective action plans.
