Purpose:
This position is responsible for assisting the Director of MLA in supervision of MLA staff, developing programs, setting the direction and overseeing the implementation of Member Leadership and Action work to meet the goal of engaging ten (10) percent of members and developing 1% of members as high level leaders in the broad 99% Movement, taking movement building, leadership development and equity to a new level inside our union.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• As assigned, supervise MLA staff  in accordance with our Union’s Leadership Standards and ensure the success of our Department’s mission and goals.

• Work with the MLA Director, senior staff, and Local Committee members to inform the development of the direction of the department and union-wide MLA programs to achieve the goals outlined by the “Empowering Leaders for a Broad 99% Movement” 2012 Convention Resolution.

• Program development, monitoring, and evaluation of MLA initiatives and programs, as assigned.

• At the direction of the MLA Director, work closely with Division Directors or their designees in Health Care, Public Services, and Property Services to develop division-based comprehensive, strategic member leadership and action programs and identify ways to integrate MLA work at the local level.

• Develop strategies, plans and programs to integrate member leadership and action work with locals, FFE city campaigns, divisions, and other IU departments.  

• Support national campaigns that incorporate member leadership development and activism and supervise the campaign coordination.

• Perform other duties as required to assist the MLA Director in leading the department and fulfilling its mission.

Contacts:
MLA Director, LAJ staff, officer-appointed advisory committees including the LAJ Committee of the SEIU Executive Board; Divisions and Department Heads; SEIU Local leaders and staff.

Direction and Decision Making:  This position reports to the Director of Member Leadership and Action and supervises management staff in the MLA department who are responsible for discrete parts of the work of the department.

Experience and Education
A minimum of five (5) years of experience demonstrating progressively greater responsibility in a union (at least two (2) of them in a local union), developing member and staff leaders, implementing and evaluating programs; a minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising and directing staff; demonstrated experience developing, leading and managing projects and organization-wide programs.  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in labor relations, business administration, human resources, liberal arts or other related field is preferred, but significant union experience may be substituted.

All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

•       Extensive knowledge of unions at both the local and international level.  Deep
        commitment to member leadership development and action as the primary way    to build power for the 99%.

•        Experience supervising staff by building strong collaborative staff teams

•        Ability to develop and implement strategic, comprehensive national member engagement programs

•        Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff, including senior level managers, Division Directors, Department Heads

•         Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize projects and demonstrated ability to operate in politically sensitive situations, to exercise good judgement and  to think critically.
     
Physical Requirements:  Travel and work beyond traditional business hours is required.
