SEIU Nurse Alliance Program Director, SEIU Healthcare     

 

Purpose:

 

The Nurse Alliance Program Director is responsible for working with the Chair of the Nurse Alliance Leadership Council and the leadership of the Healthcare Division to develop and lead the program of the Nurse Alliance of SEIU Healthcare. The Program Director will be responsible for building power for SEIU’s nurse members and creating opportunities for them to become leaders on the strategic priorities of the union.

The Program Director is a senior staff position within SEIU Healthcare and the manager of the union’s Nurse Alliance. The Program Director will lead efforts to drive Nurse leadership on the Union’s program and to promote the highest possible workplace and professional standards for all nurses through legislation, advocacy, and organizing. She/he will serve as the key resource for SEIU Staff and members on nurse issues and will work collaboratively with all state Nurse Alliance programs in carrying out her/his responsibilities.

 

The Director of the SEIU Nurse Alliance is required to be a registered nurse and maintain a current registered nurse license.  This nurse should have experience in leading organizing or political campaigns and must have excellent critical thinking, communication, and writing abilities. Along with superb interpersonal, leadership and teamwork skills the Director must have the capacity to balance competing priorities and to work independently.

 

The position also requires solid computer skills and a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  As director it is necessary to be flexible and quickly learn new skills to adapt to changing program requirements or campaigns.  Preference will be giving to candidates who will base in Washington DC and travel is an integral part of the position.

 

Areas of Focus:

  • Legislation/public policy - Effecting legislative and public policy changes that achieve the goals of SEIU Healthcare including the fight for justice and equality for all, promoting the foundations of the healthcare system—Medicaid, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act, and ensuring the highest working conditions and professional standards for nurses and highest quality healthcare standards.
  • Organizing – Working to unite all nurses by organizing the unorganized
  • Advocacy and Communications- Seeks opportunities for nurses to take a public lead on the Union’s program, including our work to expand healthcare coverage to more working Americans through the health care law. Also develops programs to address issues of particular concern to nurses, such as improving safety in the workplace, safe staffing, and quality initiatives.
  • Resource- Serves as an expert source for pertinent and timely information related to nursing practice and quality care
  • Professional education and advancement – Promotes and expands nurses’ opportunities for professional education and advancement
  • Liaison – Coordinates and facilitates communication and activities among nurses and relevant parties to advance the highest standards of care in the safest possible settings

SEIU Executive Officers, leaders and staff of local unions and other affiliated organizations; leaders and staff SEIU, leaders and staff of other national unions, healthcare and other advocacy organizations; local/county/state/federal officials; employer representatives and others.

 

Direction and Decision Making

The position will take direction from the Chair of the Nurse Alliance Leadership Council and will be supervised by the Division Director or her designee. The position will work closely with the Chair of SEIU Healthcare, particularly on issues of workforce development, healthcare quality, and MD/RN professional standards.  

 

Education and Experience:

 

Applicants must have a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Registered Nurse with current License, BSN/MSN Preferred
  • Experience as a leader or organizer in a union or other social justice organization
  • Ability to work effectively with leaders and staff in complex and sometimes political situations.
  • Able to lead and provide direction
  • Able to learn new skills and adapt quickly to changing environments and campaigns
  • Knowledge of unions and their issues
  • Able to plan, convene and lead conference calls, meetings and national conferences of nurse leaders and activists.
  • Commitment to social and economic justice
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, ability to make formal presentations
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to handle multiple priority projects and meet established timelines.
  • Able to multi-task and set priorities
  • Ability to facilitate workshops and other educational sessions.
  • Ability to use social media tools to promote nurse agenda.
  • Solid computer skills

 

Physical Requirements:

Work is generally performed in an office setting, but may be required to work in other settings conducive to performing the tasks required to complete assignments. Travel and long and extended hours are occasionally required.
