Program Specialist/Adult Education Instructor

 

About the SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania Education and Fund

The SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania Training and Education Fund is a joint labor-management program that provides education and training opportunities to nursing home and hospital workers across Pennsylvania. The Fund supports working adults returning to school through tuition assistance, career counseling, educational support and on-line learning preparation.

Position Description

The Program Specialist/Adult Education Instructor will be responsible for providing members with information about Fund programs, developing systems with facilities to determine training needs/interests, recruiting for Fund training opportunities, and identifying and evaluating educational providers in the community.  This individual will also be responsible for establishing and teaching classes using Fund curriculum and/or the PLATO Learning Environment tools to help employees achieve their educational and career goals. Classes may include Basic Computer Skills, GED Preparation, Preparation for College or Nursing school entrance exams.  The Program Specialist will also conduct outreach, program development, career counseling, and adult education classes for employees at participating facilities. 

Specific Responsibilities

• Organize and conduct on-line and/or other adult education classes as required.
• Visit participating facilities on a regularly scheduled basis to talk with employees and managers about Fund programs and relevant education/training needs
• Recruit for and promote Fund programs
• Provide basic career and educational counseling either in-person or on the phone
• Develop positive relationships with managers, union members, and union organizers at participating Fund facilities
• Organize local or regional training opportunities provided by educational partners as appropriate; for example CPR certification, Computer Skills, etc.
• Develop expert knowledge of area educational institutions and programs
• Gain a basic understanding of financial aid opportunities at area educational institutions in order to help participants complete the application process and meet all program deadlines.
• Assess students’ current educational skills and develop learning plans with the student to achieve their goals.

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Education or related field.  Master’s Degree preferred.

Essential Skills/Attributes/Requirements:

• Minimum of 3 years of experience working in adult education or career counseling
• Possess excellent coaching skills
• Present a professional demeanor with great interpersonal and communication skills; is confident and outgoing
• Excellent computer and record-keeping skills
• Works independently and is self-directed.
• Prior union experience preferred
• A driver's license and fully-insured car; ability to travel extensively within a specific geographic area.  On rare occasions, overnight stays may be required.
• Bilingual in Spanish and English a plus.

Salary

FLSA Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

This is a part-time, 20 hour a week position
Salary range – Hourly rate depending on experience
